Cameron Norrie secured the biggest victory of his professional journey by rallying from a early deficit to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph signifies Norrie's first ever win over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who becomes the newest UK male player in history to overcome a world No 1. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just tried to appreciate my tennis in the second half of the year. To secure a triumph like this, it's the biggest success of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the top player and likely the strongest competitor in the world right now."

The British player, seeded 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive premier event wins, which represented the best series of performances in the Spanish star's developing professional path.

Contest Overview

Alcaraz appeared to be progressing easily towards victory in the beginning as he sailed past the opening set. However, Norrie gradually battled back into the match by serving with sharper placement and pulling the Spaniard into prolonged, grueling exchanges. His relentless shot tolerance and reliability slowly took its toll.

During large parts of the contest, the world number one delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The young star looked particularly uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the best shot in the game for much of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, the British player presented Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, sustaining his consistency, fitness and power the entire contest while delivering effective serves and picking his spots to advance into the court and play aggressively.

Personal Journey

After dealing for months due to a significant left forearm injury and difficulties with his performance, Norrie dropped as far down as 91st globally this year. After making the quarter-finals at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros round of 16 after that, this win reinforces the experienced player's improvement as he seeks to make his way to the elite rankings and beyond. Alcaraz, despite his remarkable achievements, is yet to master how to display his top form in indoor conditions.
