A Denmark-based man has been convicted of sharing sexually explicit scenes from copyrighted films and television shows on the online platform Reddit.

Based on a law enforcement document reviewed by media outlets, the unnamed individual shared 347 clips of explicit scenes in a Reddit group he managed, which were then watched 4.2 million times.

The country's police state he has been given a seven-month deferred jail term for violating copyright laws.

Experts say the man was prosecuted under a rarely-used provision in Denmark's copyright law, with the court finding that by removing the scenes out of their original context, the man had damaged the performers' "ethical entitlements".

He has also been convicted of distributing more than 25 TB of copyrighted data.

From March 2022 to mid-2023, the user using the alias "KlammereFyr" on Reddit uploaded sexually explicit clips including over 100 actresses.

He shared them in the subreddit he was a moderator of.

Per the Danish anti-piracy organization the Rights Alliance, his subreddit had more than 6,000 members and users were encouraged to ask for excerpts of particular actors.

In 2023, advocates reported the case to the authorities on behalf of the affected artists, directors and producers, which led to the forum being closed down.

One actress, among the actresses whose nude content were shared in the community, explained to Danish media at the period she believed there was a distinction between appearing unclothed in a film and appearing on Reddit.

The actress said the uploads constituted "abuse".

'An important message'

The man was arrested in fall 2024 and admitted culpable to the charges last month.

In a comment after the verdict, TRA head the organization's leader remarked the outcome sent an "significant" signal "indicating violations of creators' rights have consequences".

The verdict is considered unique in Denmark for its application of the "ethical protections" section of the national copyright law, which states an artist's work cannot be used in a manner which violates their standing.

Intellectual property specialist a legal scholar informed the media the case was "rare" for its emphasis on the damage to the dignity of an performer, rather than to them economically.

How the case could influence nations abroad is unclear.

But she added there may be "an increasing number of such cases" in the future with the growth of artificial intelligence, where "the integrity of one's creative output might be tempered with much more easily".
